All Shapes And Sizes
Recently, I made a batch of cookies with two of my grandsons. They washed their hands, then commenced to playing with the dough, and that-in-itself seemed enough for them. Well, playing with the dough anyway, not washing their hands. They stretched the dough, and patted it, (more like they beat it) one of the future cookies even got rolled on the floor. I was a good sport, however, and never mentioned that to our unknowing, yet willing, cookie testers. But finally, all the cookies obtained a shape and size. After their creations I must say there were quite a lot of varied sizes. Some cookies were round and small, some oblong, and some took on the shape of a fine-looking cookie.
After arranging the cookies onto the pan, I brought out the sprinkles, and sugar glaze, this was the Grand Finale! So, I let my grandsons have at it! Many sprinkles found their way to the floor instead of, the cookies, even so, those boys sure created some beauties. Two rather large cookies were special, for each of them had their own cookie to decorate.
The oldest decorated with lots of color. While the youngest, meticulously gave his cookie eyes, nose, and a mouth. After baking the cookies, we were in awe of the masterpieces aligning the pan. And rightly so, their own personal large cookies were the best of the batch. I took pictures as they proudly stood holding their own cookie. They were slow to eat their artwork, savoring every bite, but finally devouring every crumb.
While cleaning up all the remnants of our baking fiasco. I took one last gander at the remaining pan of cookies, there were many shapes and sizes arrayed on the pan. Some cookies were adorned with such beauty, while others lacked a decent substance or mere existence.
As I clean, I always pray, maybe that’s why I like to clean so much, but the Lord spoke to my heart, that we are all like this pan of cookies, we are all quite different. Some of the cookies really stood out as if begging to be the first to eat. Still others would be chosen without a second thought. But there was one in the pan that looked like it would be the last one that anyone picked. Maybe, that one was the one from the floor. Nonetheless, the shapes and sizes did remind me of people, but one fact remained they all came from the same batter, rolled from the same dough. All had an opportunity, but unforeseen circumstances took its toll on their beauty and substance.
I would say that we all have felt like we have been rolled on the floor at times, and possibly we may think we are not as sparkly or shiny as others or may not stand out in a crowd. But the fact remains that God created and formed us to be different. He gave us all substance as we were formed in our mother's womb. I admit I did eat that little cookie that didn’t stand out, the no one else wanted.
Guess what? It was just as delicious and tasted the same as the most decorative cookies.
There’s beauty in each of us, just waiting for the chance to shine and sparkle. Ecclesiastes says it best.
Ecclesiastes 3:11
"He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the human heart; yet no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end."
If we can remember this- No size, nor shape, will ever matter anymore.
